These events are announced in our Monthly Newsletter and dates will be shown on the schedule below as they become known. JANUARY
Crab Feast Annual event on third Saturday supports the North Plains Senior Center Meals-on-Wheels program operated by Loaves and Fishes. Contact Margaret Wold at 503-647-5666.
FEBRUARY
2/1 Friday First Flick - 6:00 p.m. at Library
2/2 One Book One Community: Kick Off Event featuring author Brian Doyle. 6:30 pm at Library
Brian Doyle will kickoff the month long event with a reading from his book, Mink River. He is not only an award-winning writer, but also a very entertaining speaker. Come and enjoy samples of Oregon delicacies while listening to music by Puccini, as featured in the novel. This free event will also unveil the opening of a unique Celtic quilt art exhibit by Philomena Durcan that will remain on display at the Library throughout February and March. A few copies of Mink River will be available.
2/9 Super Saturdy Event - 1:00 at Jessie Mays
Watch and listen to master storyteller Will Hornyak as he regales young and old alike with tales from Native American and Irish Celtic legends. These two cultures have been specifically selected because they are featured in the book Mink River by Brian Doyle. All ages are welcome to attend this free event.
2/14 Irish Music Concert: One Book One Ciommunity - 7:00 p.m. at Library
The musical duo of Brenda Searcy and Jim Lowenhertz will perform a variety of Irish Celtic songs and music, including jigs, reels, and ballads. Historical background will be provided for each piece. This is a free concert. All ages are welcome to celebrate Valentine’s Day by attending this very special performance.
2/20 Discussion - One book One Community 9:30 a.m. at Library
There will be a special gathering of interested community members and visitors to discuss the book Mink River. This discussion will be led by Mike Spooner. Everyone is invited to participate in this free event.
2/22 Sock Hop - A Tribute to the Day the Music Died 6:30 p.m. at Jessie Mays
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. This is a free event and everyone is invited.
2/22 Art Lecture by Philomena Durcan 7:30 -8:30 p.m. at Library
Come to hear Celtic quilt artist Philomena Durcan discuss “The Celts and Their Art”. She will explain the history of this design form and her artistic method of creating the quilts on display. Her three books are available for checkout from the Washington County Cooperative Library Services. This program is free of charge.
2/24 Playdate 1:30 pm - 4:00 p.m. at Jessie Mays
Enjoy active indoor play at Jessie Mays. This event is free and open to all chindren 3-12.
2/28 Craft Night led by Jacque Hermens 6:00 p.m. at Library
Join us for a two-hour class on how to weave Native American pine needle baskets taught by Jacque Hermens. This class is offered to highlight one of the themes of the book, Mink River. There is no cost, but pre-registration is required. Call the Library at 503-647-5051 to reserve your place.

The City holds a volunteer recognition event each year in April at the Jessie Mays Community Hall. Besides being a fun way to catch up with neighbors, this occasion is used to formally recognize individuals who have volunteered their time to making improvements in the community.

The City encourages citizens to hold their garage sales the first Saturday in May (8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.). The North Plains Events Association pays for advertisement in the local area so you're guaranteed a good turn-out. 5/4 North Plains Garden Club Plant Sale 9:00 am to 3:00 p.m. at Jessie Mays
5/4 Friends of Library Book Sale 9:00 am to 3 p.m.
5/11 May Clean-up Day
Held on the second Saturday in May (8:00 a.m), this day gives everyone a chance to clean-up their yards and get rid of that junk! Volunteers help those who do not have transport, and Garbarino Disposal and Recycling Service graciously provides dumpsters for the event. This service is available to residents only.
This years event features a shredding truck to destroy confidential documents and a trailer to accept donations for Goodwill Industries.

6/7 St. Edwards Annual Dinner and Auction
St. Edward's Catholic Church conducts this annual dinner and auction the first Friday in June. This year the dinner and auction will be held Friday, June 7, 2013. For time and ticket information please call (503) 647-2131.
6/15 Senior Center Dance, 7:00 p.m. Jessie Mays, open to the public.
North Plains Farmer's Market -- The North Plains Farmer's Market is an annual event. The market will be held on Saturday mornings between June 15 and September 28. Please click here for a complete schedule and information on reserving vendor space.

8/6 National Night Out - The City holds National Night out in partnership with the North Plains Police Department, Public Works Department and the Washington County Fire District #2 and Sheriff's Office. It's a wonderful opportunity to learn about keeping safe in the community. In the past, we have given out bicycle helmets and provided free food! Hope you can join us this year on ther first Tuesday in August (August 6, 2013)

8/9-11 Summerfest and Garlic Out West - The Festival features music, crafts, entertainment, kids' activities and of course lots of garlic cooked in many food, including ice cream. Parade is held on Saturday and Car Show on Sunday on Commercial Street.

9/7 Golf Tournament - The North Plains Chamber of Commerce sponsors an annual golf tournament. The 25th Annual Chris Olson Golf Tournament will be held at the Sunset Grove Golf Course.
