Volunteer Spotlight: 250+ Volunteers Make Elephant Garlic Festival Happen

egf_2022_posterIt’s that time of year again! August 12-14 is the 24th Annual North Plains Elephant Garlic Festival! The North Plains Events Association (NPEA) produces the event with support from the City of North Plains, and this great event could not happen without all of the amazing community members and organizations that step up to fill important volunteer roles. There are around 250+ volunteers each year and that’s far too many to list them all, but below are a few that will hopefully inspire you to consider volunteering with them!

  • Patti Burns is the vice-president of the NPEA and is the overall coordinator of the festival. This is her 19th year in this role.
  • Sherrie Simmons is the president of the NPEA and is the art vendor coordinator and recruits, schedules, and maps out booths including marking the field and marking the vendor parking area.
  • Cindy Smith coordinates all of the volunteers and scheduling.
  • Stewart King is in charge of event fencing and city sign display.
  • Brenda Lyons organizes the parade and the volunteers from the North Plains Christian Church who do all the festival table and garbage clean up.
  • Terry Burns is in charge of the attendee parking lot on Commercial Street.
  • Russ Sheldon from the Knights of Pythias leads the coordination of the Beer Garden and their members help set up and take down the beer garden area.
  • Mayor Teri Lenahan jumps in to help where ever it’s needed.
  • Evan King has been our “Stinky” mascot for the past few years.
  • Robert and Wesley Dow and friends installed the Highway 26 sign this year.
  • The City’s Public Works crew takes care of street closure signs, some park upkeep, and mowing areas next to the event and the St Edward Catholic Church field that is used for vendor parking.
And the great news…it’s not too late for you to get involved, too! Even with all the amazing people and groups that help, there is always a need for more volunteers for community events year-round. Please email volunteernow@northplainsevents.com or visit www.northplainsevents.com to sign up!
